This is the first time I've ever written a review on here but Hamilton deserves it.
It's my favorite musical and I was lucky enough to watch it live on Broadway in october 2018 and it was absolutely amazing but now thanks to this I had the chance to watch it with the INCREDIBLE original cast.
I love how it's just a recording of the show. Best way to captivate what it's like to be in the room where it happens.
My number one favorite Broadway musical, Hamilton' is now on Disney+ and it looks like an epic masterpiece!
I first saw this in Chicago on October 2018 and I keep on listening to the songs all the time!
The cinematography (originally filmed in 2016) was magnificent; the original Broadway cast was incredibly talented; the songs that are from the original musical were phenomenal; and the story was delightful.
This is one epic musical that you will never forget.

For years we have all heard about this great show that only the fortunate or (mostly) the financially very comfortable were able to see in New York, and later London. Years of praise and hype, which recently then led into the hype of it suddenly going to be released as a film version direct into homes via Disney. There are upsides and downsides to this; the main upside being that hopefully more productions release that there is money to be made from a wider audience for this type of thing (also suggested by RSC and NTL releasing filmed shows onto YouTube during the UK lockdown. The main downside though appears to have been that lots of people (including myself) don't know anything about it, only that it is supposed to be brilliant, and tuned in to something they hadn't expected and then took an extreme response as a counter to the hype.
As a piece of musical theatre, Hamilton is great though. It has all the hallmarks of the musical genre in its overlapping dialogue, its reprises, its mix of the comedic and the tragic, and how 'big' it all is. It takes all these things that make musicals so enjoyable for their familiarity, and makes them feel fresh and energetic. The writing is perhaps historically inaccurate in its presentation of character and detail, but in the broad sweep it is easy to get caught up in the story being told, and the writing has plenty of smart and funny lines, all of which are well delivered by the talented and incredibly diverse cast. As a production, the film gives access to how 'big' it all is, but I enjoyed the proximity - although I don't go to musical theatre often and am more used to seeing them as films so probably I would notice less anything 'lost' in translation perhaps as much as others would.
So a great show that stays within its genre but is a superior example of it; probably it is different enough, clever enough, and 'modern' enough that it does bring over a wider audience, but it is worth muting the hype before watching, and knowing that you are watching something of a certain genre and not expect it to be something other than what it professes to be.
